How to trap rats with DétruiRAT traps?
To maximise your results, here are our essential methods.
What is the best bait for trapping rats?
The best baits are the foods that rats are used to eating in their environment.
After five years of research, having trapped over 3000 rats, watched thousands of videos, and tested different baits in various environments, we discovered that the best baits are the foods that rats are used to consuming where they are. There is no miracle bait to attract rats; what works perfectly for your neighbour may not work for you. They are certainly attracted to certain types of food and certain smells, but if they have already established habits in an environment, they will continue to eat what they are used to eating without risk.
Rats do tend to snub any food that is foreign to them, as what is unfamiliar seems potentially dangerous. They have an excellent sensory and olfactory memory, which means they can detect changes in their environment, including new smells or flavours, and become wary. They fear novelty, which is why the poisons and other rodenticides you introduce when you are infested sometimes take time before being consumed.
When they detect an unknown substance, they may instinctively be wary of it to avoid poisoning themselves. Furthermore, rats have the ability to quickly learn to avoid certain substances that have caused them problems in the past. If a rat has been poisoned or has seen other rats in its group being poisoned by a rodenticide or other poison, it will become even more suspicious of any suspicious food. This is also why rodenticides and other pest poisons do not act instantly; there is always a delay before the animal dies. If a rat were to die immediately while eating poison, the other members of the colony would no longer allow themselves to be poisoned.
How to catch rats with DétruiRAT traps? Our 3 effective methods for catching rats
In the confirmed absence of rodents, position traps without bait along walls and near entrances for effective prevention. It is much easier to trap rats and other rodents preventively when they are searching for new territories. Not yet familiar with the area, they will be less wary of the traps.
DétruiRAT®️ traps have been specially designed to resemble their natural environment. A rat searching for a new place might even think that a DétruiRAT®️ trap could serve as a refuge to protect itself from predators. It is advisable to leave the traps operational, even in the absence of rodent activity, as this makes them easier to trap. They will be less suspicious because upon their arrival in this new environment, the trap will be an integral part of the said environment! Preventing rats, mice, and other rodents is certainly the most effective solution.
In the event of a rat invasion or other rodents, use the DétruiRAT Maxi-Traps: If you notice droppings, a strong smell of urine, or if you see rats during the day or evening, this may indicate ainvasionof rodents. In this case, it is imperative to react quickly, as you may be facing a rat infestation. If you observe droppings of different sizes, it means there are several generations of rats, and consequently a considerable number of rats.
Trap rats indoors... but also outdoors
In less than a year, we trapped more than 1,000 rats by conducting tests at one of our clients' premises (rats reproduce very quickly, so nests multiply exponentially). Company managers began by eliminating places where rats could nest inside buildings and, thanks to DétruiRAT® traps, quickly trapped and eliminated them. They then worked to prevent rats from outside from entering the buildings, as the large, hungry rats had begun to attack the foundations and doors. Several traps were then placed outside the buildings, resulting in massive catches.
In addition, to deter rats from damaging the buildings, we left small openings for them to pass through and installed DétruiRAT® Maxi-Prises traps right in front of them. To get in, they had to pass through the traps. In one Maxi-Prises trap, we managed to catch 16 rats in one night using this strategy. On another night, using other traps, we captured 33 rats.
The following nights were quieter, suggesting that the rats had been driven out or had left in search of other, less hostile territories. However, remember that as long as there are rats in your environment, the problem will not be solved. Rats will always return and may even use old burrows. That is why you should never leave a DétruiRAT® trap inactive. They must always be ready to operate, even in the absence of rodents.
Please feel free to share any methods you may use to effectively trap rats. Despite our research and testing, there is still much to learn about these rodents in order to achieve mass captures.
How to place your DétruiRAT trap and baits?
Place your trap about 20 cm from the desired location, and ensure that it is aligned with the trail of bait that you will lay on the ground.
Start by spreading the bait in a line or thin layer 10 to 15 cm wide over a length of approximately 1.6 metres.
No need to overdo it : the rats might be full before they even reach the trap door.
Once the bait is in place, lift the trap and position it over the bait. You can put a little more bait at the entrance to the trap and in the centre, where the trap will be placed.
In principle, once you have set the trap, the bait should extend beyond each end of the trap by approximately 50 cm. This will allow the rats to eat the food while slowly approaching the trap until they are caught.
· Make sure not to place bait larger than 1.2 cm and a layer of bait thicker than 1.2 cm. You could obstruct the infrared barriers and mislead the trap.
· Also, be careful not to place bait directly beneath doors. If an animal is caught, the doors may remain ajar.
· Be careful not to touch the food you place in the traps. Use a bowl or ingredient scoop to handle the food, and ensure that the tool is clean and does not alter the taste of the bait, so that the rats are not disturbed by your scent on the food.
